What's At STAKE for UNC and GT?

This weekend's series with UNC at Georgia Tech will determine many things. "It seems like all our games usually are really competitive with them," Georgia Tech coach Danny Hall said of the Tar Heels. "I'm sure these are going to be the same way. They're one of the elite teams not only in our league but in the country, and hopefully we are too. We'll find out."

From Baseball America:

North Carolina might have an advantage over the Yellow Jackets on the mound—the Tar Heels have a pitching edge over just about everybody—but Georgia Tech's offense has been decidedly more explosive thus far. The Yellow Jackets lead the ACC with 42 home runs (eight more than second-place UNC) despite playing three fewer games (22) than any other team in the conference. Tech is scoring nine runs per game, while UNC is averaging 7.5. The balanced Jackets have 11 players with two or more home runs, led by corner infielders Tony Plagman and Matt Skole, who have seven apiece.

If the pitching holds up, Georgia Tech might establish itself as the ACC's most balanced team. Certainly the Jackets can take control of the ACC by weathering their current three-week stretch, which includes series at Miami and home against UNC and Virginia. By Easter Sunday, we'll know if Georgia Tech has passed North Carolina as the ACC's team to beat.

Oregon Baseball.

OREGON DUCKS BASEBALL

You're probably thinking baseball? Oregon has a baseball team? Well yes they do... They dropped the program 28 years ago and have once again brought it back. They somehow lured former Cal State Fullerton coach George Horton who has won multiple College World Series and tons of regionals and super regionals. The home stadium of the Ducks has changed. They used to play at Howe Field, built in 1936. The ballpark was converted in 1987 to accommodate the softball team. So the university built an $18 million ballpark in the shadow of Autzen Stadium. Ground was broken in August. They have already hosted reigning national champions Fresno State. They lost the series, but did put up a fight and one out of the three. Last weekend they renewed the once know Civil War rivalry with Oregon State. The Ducks faced tough competition and had a rough weekend, but won one of the games. Who expects a team to be very successful and have a strong team in the first year back? They have some high expectations with a promising recruiting class. The University of Oregon had to drop a sport, which was wrestling in order to be able to bring in baseball due to budget constraints. They currently stand at 11-14, which is not bad for a first year back. Oregon Baseball is back. They will contend for postseason in the next couple of years.

Key Matchups this upcoming weekend.

North Carolina is at Georgia Tech. Recent history shows that North Carolina has a tough time winning in Atlanta. Georgia Tech is coming off of a great road series win at Miami. North Carolina fought and won the series vs. Virginia. I am going with Georgia Tech this series. They have the power to really put a hurting on North Carolina. No Sweep.

Another key matchup is LSU at Georgia. Both LSU (6) and Georgia (3) are high in the Top 25.
The both are coming off of key series wins. A player to look out for on UGA is Rich Poythress who had 4 HRs and a .600 weekend batting average. LSU has faced some tough competition and came through. I am going with LSU this weekend.

#8 UC Irvine is at #1 Cal State Fullerton. This might be the biggest series this weekend. Both coming off strong weekends. Cal State held on to the #1 ranking for the second week in a row. UC Irvine can pull the upset if their pitching staff can live up to their highest potential. Cal State will keep the #1 ranking and win the series 2-1.

Other notable series are:
Florida State at #11 Miami.
#17 Oklahoma State at #9Texas.

The 102 MPH College Fastball

San Diego State Aztecs pitcher, Stephen Strasburg, owns college baseball most powering fastball. He has been clocked consistently at 101 MPH and can hit 102 about every 4 pitches. Strasburg was almost put away and had no attention from the Aztecs' strength coach, he later focused and started lighting up the radar guns. He has a 254 to 38 strikeout-to-walk ratio, which can be unheard of. Strasburg has a 6'4 220 pound frame that can just fan batter after batter. He is the consensus No. 1 pick in this upcoming draft. The Washington Nationals are the favorite to pick him at No. 1, but if they don't they will be facing serious criticism and maybe a move back to Montreal. Tony Gwynn, coach of the Aztecs, has been just favoring Strasburg and even says that Strasburg makes many hitters look silly at the plate. "Strasburg's four-seamer and two-seamer can make good hitters look slow. His sweeping slider can make them look silly," said an MLB scout. Gwynn is helping Strasburg's future by only allowing him to about 115 pitches per start and he starts only once a week.

College Baseball First 5 Weeks...

The first five weeks of college baseball have been good and bad. Many people have gained the spotlight and others have lost it. The top teams of the league so far are: LSU, Cal State, Rice, North Carolina, Miami, Georgia, and Georgia Tech. The ACC once again is the power house of college baseball. Other teams like Florida State, Clemson, and NC State have had rough beginnings. They all started the year with high hopes for a regional, or super regional runs. A sleeper that has come out and shown people they are for real is the Virginia Cavaliers.
